Adventures in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
One of the most popular destinations in the The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is this broad valley surrounded by mountains. What makes it so special is its ability to blend the awe inspiring mountains, history and abundant wildlife in one location accessible by all skill levels.
The loop allows you to meander along in your vehicle stopping at the historic buildings and viewing the mountains and wildlife safely from pull-offs .
You can bicycle your way along the loop anytime HOWEVER it can be a little dicey with the amount of vehicle traffic so we LOVE the fact that on Wednesdays (certain times of the year) they close the loop to vehicles and open it to bicyclist and hikers ONLY.
It was on two separate Wednesdays that we took the opportunity to enjoy the bicycling.

We found that by biking the loop we witnessed more wildlife (5 different bear sightings) and the opportunity to photograph with less interruptions.
What we loved was that there were rangers and volunteers everywhere monitoring the wildlife interactions. If it appears that we were closer than the recommended 50 yard distance, it is because of zoom lenses on the camera Mike uses. We are always respectful of all wildlife as we don’t want to endanger their lives by becoming a nuisance.
