Adventures in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
One of the most popular hikes within the The Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Cades Cove is Abrams Falls.
This easy 5-mile round trip walk to Abrams Falls was spectacular on so many levels.
#1 The laborious work of the Friend of the Smokies to groom the well traveled trail is nothing short of AH-MAZ-ING! These modern day CCC heroes/volunteers need to be thanked tremendously for all of their spectacular hard work.
#2 Arriving early, directly after a rain shower, we had this popular trail to ourselves. Except for this little guy!
#3 The Falls speak for themselves. Be careful when traversing the rocks (slippery) and just very recently someone drowned at the base of the falls after being trapped in the underlying debris.

#4 Wildlife sightings. We encountered an adolescent bear crossing the path ahead of us. He was a complete gentleman and never paid us any mind. We followed bear encounter guidelines and stayed our distance once we realized he was coming down the mountain to our left and hidden by trees and bushes (they can be surprisingly stealth). Then we started slowly backing up and talking to him. “Nice Bear! Aren’t you handsome? Out for your morning breakfast?” those types of things. It was a perfect and exciting encounter.
Many thanks to these special folks.
