Morton Overlook Sunsets

Adventures in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Everyone loves a great sunset and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park produces magnificent displays.

We love chasing sunsets and working to capture the majesty for all to see. It takes patience and time.

Tip #1: You need to arrive EARLY to ensure you have a good spot. Like many other sunset spots, the small-ish parking area at Morton’s Overlook fills up most every night.

Tip #2 The sun moves quick so be ready with your finger on the trigger as the sun just touches the horizon. In some cases, you can get the sun’s rays on full display.

Tip #3: If you are quick to leave when the sun dips below the horizon, you may want to wait around for about 30 minutes when the real colors show up!

Traveling from Townsend, we took the scenic drive down Little River Road, passing by the Sugarland Visitor Center and driving up Newfound Gap Road passing the Chimney Tops and Alum Cave trailheads. We use Google Maps and if you input Morton Overlook it should pop up to provide you with exact directions.
