Southern Michigan

We spent 23 days in 2023 between the dates of June 30th to July 23rd, camping near towns such as Grass Lake, Hopkins, Grand Haven, Holland and Grand Rapids. The areas, all beautiful and full of things to do, were very busy with people and traffic, especially during the summer months.

After experiencing everything from Botanical Gardens to Bike Trails to Beach Towns, we would recommend the following adventures:

Grand Rapids Area

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park We were amazed by the size of depth of this attraction. We didn’t allow for nearly as much time as we would have liked to spend, allow for at least one full day. It is touted as one of the world’s finest horticultural display gardens and sculpture parks right in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is ranked among the most-visited art museums worldwide and named the Best Sculpture Park in the United States. There are over 200 captivating sculptures, inviting you to experience the perfect blend of art and nature. A must see when in the area.

Fred Meijer Bike Trails were diverse and interesting traveling through small towns, forested sections and interesting stops for snacks. The two we did (Heartland Trail and Flat River Trail) are a little northeast from Grand Rapids. Both of these can be found on TrailLink.

South Haven for the Lighthouse, walking the beach and a downtown for shopping, eats and drinks.

Grand Haven especially for the Lighthouse at Sunrise or Sunset. A cute downtown area within walking distance from the beach that includes shopping, eats and drinks is nearby.

Honorable mentions include:

Holland famous for its Dutch heritage, Windmill Island Gardens and beaches. We visited the Windmill Island Gardens which is worth a visit; but, the highlight is during tulip season which we didn’t get to experience. We would suggest visiting during tulip season. We never made it to the beach as the traffic was horrific just trying to make our way so we abandoned the idea.

Saugatuck is worth a visit. We hit it during a weekend when parking was hard to come by but we managed and walked the streets stopping at the eclectic shops, enjoying the walk along the water and the artistry as well as a few treats.
