Unaka Mountain Recreation Area
Beauty Spot is most definitely one of the most aptly named locations… EVER!
This little slice of Eden is located directly on the Appalachian Trail (on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina). You can day-hike one of the multiple routes to the top or you can take the easy way by driving your vehicle to a parking area and very short walk up to the top.
The bald offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Cherokee National Forest and the city of Erwin.
Understandably, this is a popular destination for thru hikers to want to camp for a night or spend a zero day, while recreational campers can drive up for an overnighter and sunset chasers can just stay for the show.
When taking in these outdoor activities, please ALWAYS practice the principles of Leave No Trace :
- Plan ahead and prepare.
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces [reduce multiple routes that will scar the landscape]
- Dispose of waste properly:
- Trash. Burning trash in fire pits is not the responsible thing to do, if you pack it in – pack it out!
- Human Waste. How to Pee and Poop in the Woods is a helpful article to explain both the importance of “WHY” and the information on “HOW”. It’s practical knowledge that we all want to avoid others coming across your waste (yuck) and proper disposal speeds up the decomposition process.
- Please whatever you do, and I see this all the time, pee on the side of the trail or at a building like a lean-to and LEAVE you TP or tissue on the ground. Bring a baggie (see plan and prepare) to haul out this type of trash.
- Leave what you find.
- Don’t alter campsite by digging trenches for tents or construct lean-tos, tables, chairs or other rudimentary improvements.
- Don’t damage trees and plants.
- Leave natural objects and cultural artifacts.
