A Hike on the Appalachian Trail
Adventures in
Unaka Mountain Recreation Area
Take in amazing views of Pisgah National Forest, Iron Mountain, and the Appalachian Trail on this 9+ mile hike. Note: my GPS Activity Watch recorded this as an 11 mile hike.
Prep Work
In order for us to do a point-to-point hike, we need to have a vehicle/mode of transportation or pick-up arrangements at the end point. The evening before our planned hike, I followed Mike on his Yamaha to the end-point and secured the bike for an overnight stay. We then proceeded to the Beauty Spot for sunset pictures.
NOTE: If you don’t have two vehicles your options might be:
- Contact a shuttle service ahead of time. You can often find these services at Outfitters, or they will often times recommend someone.
- Hitch a ride. This is the lesser, desirable option but we have done so if it’s in a popular and well-traveled area where it’s convenient and sage to hitch a ride with fellow adventurers.
- Because of the remote locations, you likely wouldn’t be able to arrange an Uber but maybe?!?
Start the Adventure
The next day we drove to Hughes Gap excited to begin our day’s adventure of hiking 9+ miles on the Appalachian trail over three mountain peaks ( Little Rock Knob, Iron Mountain, Piney Bald).
The trail was very well groomed and easy to follow.
Interesting mushrooms and lovely flowers all along the trail
Little Rocky Knob mountain offered the only views.
The Clyde Smith shelter is one of the spots for AT thru hikers to camp.
An old apple orchard that still had some tiny apples.
Let’s protect and enjoy our natural world together and we will continue to enjoy places like these…….
We give this adventure a……
